resources for teaching consent in schools

The Game

“We played this as a family with our two teenage daughters – who, as you might expect, weren’t exactly thrilled about playing a “parent game.” But to our surprise, they actually enjoyed it. Even better, it sparked a meaningful conversation about the kinds of behaviours that can lead to someone not feeling in agreement. The cards are fun and engaging, and the game offered a gentle way to talk about something that’s usually hard to bring up.”‍ ‍Sarah, Parent

How do you make consent education enjoyable, engaging and effective?

This fun, interactive card game helps children explore what it means to give and receive consent through everyday examples and gameplay. Designed for kids aged 10 and up, the game helps kids identify the desirable elements of a good agreement and consent.

It also helps children recognise and name behaviours that are not part of a good agreement or consent.

The game supports ACARA HPE, PDHPE and CRRE curricula, including items AC9HP6P07 and AC9HP8P07, with an engaging, inclusive activity that promotes discussion and active learning, and is being used in schools throughout NSW.

The game provides an easy way to connect and discuss what can be an awkward but essential topic. Playing gives children the language they need to practice consent as a life skill.

At the heart of the game is one simple truth:
Without agreement, there is no consent.

Each F.I.R.S.T. card represents an essential ingredient of a good agreement:

  • Freely given – No pressure or force.

  • Informed – Everyone understands what they’re agreeing to.

  • Responsive – Consent is context specific. It can change at any time.

  • Specific – Clear about who, what, when, where and why.

  • ‘Talked’ about – Agreement is communicated clearly.

When all five ingredients are present, you’ve got a good agreement.

  • Parents and carers

  • Teachers and school counsellors

  • Youth workers and psychologists

  • Community organisations and family therapists

  • Anyone who wants to raise consent-aware young people

Who is this game for?

Why this game matters

Consent isn’t just about intimacy. It’s about how we communicate, set boundaries and respect others – every day.

By learning and practising the language of consent through play, children build the confidence to make and recognise good agreements, and what consent is, in real life.

Agreement F.I.R.S.T. makes it easier for parents, carers and teachers to initiate conversations about consent early, when they matter most.
